Remember Miss Congeniality?
It’s Monday night and I stayed in and completed my usual TV rounds. This evening though, LivingTV (UK) aired the Miss Universe 2004 beauty pageant. I remember when I was a little girl back in Manila, I never missed watching the pageant’s coronation night. I suppose that every little girl’s dream is either to be a princess or a beauty queen, and admittedly, I was no different. But then as the years went by, I got out of the habit especially when I first moved to Europe back in 1996. Plus, this region of the world was not really into beauty pageants and it was hardly ever aired on TV. Now, I’m here in the UK and they do show it every year eventhough they do not have a candidate of their own (yes, this year, there was no Miss Great Britain nor Miss England nor Miss Scotland nor Miss Wales). One thing they do here though is to make side comments while airing the show. Could be annoying at times because the commentator could get really racist but generally it’s funny.
Some of the final questions this year:
“If you were to interview a woman leader, who would you pick and why would you interview her?” — Miss Paraguay chose Eva Peron (personally, I think this was her downfall, she had a good shot at getting the crown!)
“What was the greatest mistake that you’ve done in your life and what lesson have you learned from it?” — Miss Trinidad & Tobago answered “I tripped at my first fashion catwalk and I’ve learned well from it now because here I am at the Miss Universe pageant!” (hmmm…very life altering…not!)
“Which period/era would you want to live in and what gender?” — Miss Australia said that she’d prefer living in this century as a woman because women have more liberty and freedom (good answer…but more on the likes of “world peace” if you ask me!)
Anyway, she – Jennifer Hawkins – eventually won and I do think she’s really pretty and well cool. Check out her photo at the Miss Universe website.
