Superman is dead

Heard news over the radio that Christopher Reeves had died of a heart attack last Sunday. This news has somehow brought back those feelings of loss when his cinema alter ego, Superman, was killed by his creators in the comic book series, back in 1992.

See, I’ve always loved Superman, he is one of my favourite heroes. Eventhough I wasn’t a religious follower of his saga in comic books, I remember being one of those people who frequented the library just to get a chance to read the issue where they killed Superman (it was on the Reserve section in the library, thus no one could take it home overnight and you have to be up early and be there to be able to check it out for the day!). Heads drowned in reading how he finally stopped being a super person, when he was defeated with Doomsday. Then, of course, I got engrossed in reading “A Funeral For A Friend” where practically every comic book character was there to pay their last respects. If I’m not mistaken, even non-DC characters were present.

When news broke out that Mr Reeves was paralysed after falling off a horse, I couldn’t even bear the thought that he was as I’ve always characterised him as Superman…man of steel, unable to get hurt. I was, in a way, in a state of denial that he could no longer be the superhero that he once was. I didn’t even like watching the new Superman series on TV – Lois and Clark, where the hero was played by Dean Cain. Nor Smallville, where young Superman is played by Tom Welling. For me, Christopher Reeves will always be Superman…
