I(E) spy

I was doing my blog daily digest reading when I stumbled upon this post by celiaK.

I have 3 spyware removal software that I run regularly on my PC:

(1) SpyKiller (freeware) – takes a long time to scan though, normally from 45 minutes to an hour! My rating: 4*
(2) NoAdware (licenced) – faster scanning for spyware but not often does it update its database on new spywares. My rating: 3*
(3) XoftSpy (licenced) – as fast as NoAdware, better in so far as spyware updates are concerned; however, it always consider my entire folder of Travel bookmarks (i.e. Expedia, Opodo, BA, Lufthansa, Time Out, Lonely Planet, etc.) to be “infected” with Malware. My rating: 4*

I have a 4th one but I don’t rely on it – it’s the one included in the McAfee Internet Security Suite. Everytime I run that, it would never return anything and it also takes ages to complete (although it’s a lot faster than SpyKiller)! And the Viruscan now also scans for spyware or “potentially unwanted applications.”

The strange thing is, you’d think that if you run one, the other would return nothing anymore. NO! There would always be something else that the other would find. So, I recommend that you at least run or use 2.

It may sound paranoid but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

  1. Thanks C for those tips. I will surely try them if these *&%$@+! trojans still come up. Makes me want to go back to our old Imac – we had no virus at all there. cheers!

  2. I have on my computer:
    AdAware
    Spybot
    CWShredder
    HijackThis

and of course, McAfee 8.0 comes built in with its own spykiller tool. All are installed on all my computers because like you said, not one tool works on everything.

I think though despite all our efforts, spyware, spam email, comments spam, viruses, parasites and worms are here to stay… Hey, it means job security for me. :veryhappy:

By the way, until when will you be in Manila?

  3. I use adaware, spybot, and spyware blaster… (all 3 links on sidebar of my blog) and I even downloaded AVG to back up my McAfee AV!

Lately I’ve been gettint hit with a TON of bagle virus-infected emails… not to mention that the spyware/adware/malware has gotten really BAD in the past few months.
