“The Producers”

Went to see THE PRODUCERS by Mel Brooks at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London last Saturday. It was fabulous and so hilarious! I’ve never seen a musical so funny! I definitely recommend it.

The main characters:

Max Bialystock: the once ‘King of Broadway’ producer whose last show ‘Funny Boy’ was a complete flop. He gets the money from little old ladies to finance his productions. It was lucky that I got to see Nathan Lane play Max Bialystock. He played the role originally in the Broadway production and won the Tony. The role was supposed to be originally played by Richard Dreyfuss but due to injuries, Dreyfuss had to discontinue.

Leo Bloom: the public accountant who dreamt of becoming a Broadway producer. Everytime he gets excited or frightened, he finds comfort on his blue blanket, which he had since he was 4 months old! This role is played by the famous comedian, Lee Evans.

Franz Liebkind: the neo-nazi who wrote the musical “Springtime For Hitler”. Role is played by Nicolas Colicos.

“Springtime for Hitler and Germany. Winter for Poland and France.”

“I was just a paper hanger. No one more obscurer. Got a phone call from the Reichstag. Told me I was Fuhrer. Germany was blue. What, oh, what to do? Hitched up my pants. And conquered France. Now Deutschland’s smiling through.”

Roger de Bris: Broadway’s worst director! He first came into the stage wearing a shiny ballgown and said ‘…I was supposed to go as the Grand Duchess Anastasia but looked like the Chrysler Building instead!’ Played by Conleth Hill.

Carmen Ghia: Roger de Bris’ assistant. Loved his dramatic exit…he stretches out his right arm and slowly pulls it in behind the door! James Dreyfus, of the famed Brit sitcom “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme”, plays this character beautifully.

“Keep it gay, keep it gay…”

Ulla: the sexy, blonde secretary who ‘has it and flaunts it!’ She wakes up at 7am and eats herring for breakfast and at 11am, she wants to have sex! She could also tidy-eup around the office and is aware about the beooks! Played by the lovely Leigh Zimmerman.
