How do you say

When someone dies, what do you say to those they left behind?

It has always been difficult for me to express my sympathy to those who have recently lost a loved one. Condolence just feels so impersonal, it feels like you don’t have anything to say…which is probably why it’s so curt – as Karen had put it.

It seems easier to say something if the person who passed away was the one I know. At least, I could say about how I knew him or her and how he or she touched my life, which will surely be missed. But then again, I might be too emotional to even say anything.

  1. it’s not so much a matter of being curt as it is a matter of being circumspect. i would say “i’m sorry” and leave it at that. not to be abrupt but to be respectful to the memory of the departed one.
