When someone dies, what do you say to those they left behind?
It has always been difficult for me to express my sympathy to those who have recently lost a loved one. Condolence just feels so impersonal, it feels like you don’t have anything to say…which is probably why it’s so curt – as Karen had put it.
It seems easier to say something if the person who passed away was the one I know. At least, I could say about how I knew him or her and how he or she touched my life, which will surely be missed. But then again, I might be too emotional to even say anything.

it’s not so much a matter of being curt as it is a matter of being circumspect. i would say “i’m sorry” and leave it at that. not to be abrupt but to be respectful to the memory of the departed one.
