Frustration fulfilled

Last April Fool’s Day, I had a craving…it was Friday evening and I was staying at home and I fancied watching the fat cat himself, Garfield, on pay-per-view. So, I settled down in the sofa and took hold of the remote and browsed the movies about to start and :yikes: Telewest Front Row was no longer screening it! I know, I know…that sounds lame but I really wanted to see that fat cat shake his thang!

Garfield The MovieSo, over a week later, today, I went to Bluewater and saw that there was a sale in Virgin – 5 DVDs for £30! Moreover, the Garfield the Movie (directed by Peter Hewitt) is available under that offer!!! Yipee! So, I built up my 5 DVD purchase and along with the feline movie, I picked:

  • F. Gary Gray’s The Italian Job (2003)
  • Richard Curtis’ Love Actually (2003)
  • Michael Radford’s Il Postino (1994)
  • Garry Marshall’s Beaches (1988)

When I got home, got cosy and popped in the DVD.

The voice of Garfield was done by Bill Murray. If I’m not mistaken, he also did the fat cat’s voice in the past. His performance was brilliant because he has this ‘lazy’ voice which is so fitting for the lazier cat. Jon Arbuckle was played by Breckin Meyer and vet doc Liz was played by the lovely Jennifer Love Hewitt. Odie was played by a real dog and he was sooo adorable! Nermal and Arlene were also in the movie as real cats with CGI faces. Of course, Garfield won’t be complete without Pookie…almost nothing was amiss.

I especially liked the sequence where Garfield and Odie danced to one of Black Eyed Peas’ track (I think it was Hey Mama). For a fat cat, Garfield sure can move!

The DVD contents was a bit disappointing though as the featurette on how they brought the cat from 2-D to 3-D and from the dailies to the giant screens was not as exhaustive as I was expecting it to be. They just talked about the technical stuff. They did not include how they casted the actors or even interviewed them. It had a feature on Jim Davis though, with how Garfield evolved, and it was a multi-angle feature.

All in all, it is very entertaining and I did get several moments that I was laughing out loud by myself. My neighbours must have heard it and thought I was mad! Oh well, I very well may be…

My rating: * * * *
Buying the DVD? Already have it!

  1. Babaw ko no, AnP?

Eniweys, was really delighted about the deal! Kung di lang nagmamadali yung friend ko, susuyurin ko talaga yung mga shelves eh. If you want something, maybe I could get them for you, if they’re cheaper. How much are the DVDs selling for there in Germany?

  2. I really don’t like the Garfield movie, I wanted to, but for me it for too bad. I thought Bill Murrey was a great choice for his voice though. But John? NYEH! Tom Hanks would have been better… but he wouldn’t of done it, I guess.
