What is it with saying what you think? Why do people say that it would be good for us if we just speak out what is on our minds?
What you don’t know won’t hurt you.
Yes, it may be liberating us from the burden of having to carry the thought just to ourselves but it could be well lethal for those within your communication radius. As long as sounds are able to travel the waves, it is bound to echo on to someone. The worst is probably when it is written down. Historians have made a living out of it. Journalists have made a dignified profession out of it. And tabloids have been the Pandora’s Box of historical and even insignificant events.
I’m not saying that it is all dangerous. If man had kept everything to himself, then we won’t have inventions, politics (uhm, not so sure if this is really a good thing), and religion. The Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, Oscars, Grammys and all those accolade bodies celebrate and honour great ideas, thoughts and principles from people who had the courage (with talent and determination) to speak their mind.
What about bad ideas? If there is a hall of fame, shouldn’t we also hand out statuettes to those who had the courage (with more determination but perhaps less talent) to have spoken their minds? I suppose we don’t because some of these most terrible thoughts have led the world into major catastrophes and even genocide!
Thing is, when you have put what you think for the record, you can’t have it back! Except for, of course, Milli Vanilli. Even if it’s a brilliant idea, it would be subject to criticism, validation and plagiarism. And if you become famous, is it really worth all the paparazzi hounding you? When it is a scummy one, people don’t easily forget. They may forgive you for it but the thoughts that you have expressed to them, they’ll take that with them to their graves. And it doesn’t even end there, check their last will and testament.
I should have kept my mouth shut.
I’m not advocating here that we say what we think is good and bury in silence those that we reckon will sink. What you think is good maybe bad for others and vice versa. Take this post, for example, I think that if I write this, it will free me from regretting writing about how annoyed I am right now for being a standby girl. However, now that I’ve written it (this post), you’d think that I should have just kept my mouth shut because for you, these are all nonsense. But I wouldn’t know that.
Ugh! It is hard. It is a risk. It is what we humans are. We were given a mind. Might as well use it. I’ve spoken my mind, now it’s your turn to speak yours.
Like
there is a difference between…
always honestly speaking your mind and speaking without a care in the world what anyone thinks about what you have to say
of course, a person must only speak honestly if you can stand by what you say and will not regret it later; on the other hand, it also is sometimes also good if one can honestly say that he stands corrected.
sorry sa english ko. can’t seem to get my thoughts straight. am good in math therefore… hehe
nice post!
it’s a tough situation to be in. if i’m uncertain of the effects if i tell, then i’ll wait and observe first. otherwise, i will speak my mind out. que sera sera. :smirk:
I open my mouth and regret it later… often
But I try to be honest and not let my bias get in the way. But then there are just some people that think they can whatever they want and it doesn’t matter. It does matter.
And… I’ve just realised ANP is on the same wave length as me, again. Haha.
this is not nonsense.
i think there are stuff that, true and honest they may be, do not need be publicized. we have the right to our own opinions, but in expressing our views, we should be also responsible not to sound crass and vile. also, minsan, in the WAY you say things, eh…
