A friend sent me some CDs of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). One is a personal compilation, the second one is the Kami nAPO Muna and the last one is the Ultraelectromagneticjam. The last 2 albums are tribute to Apo Hiking Society and Eraserheads, respectively. All 3, I must say are refreshing to hear and evokes a nostalgic feeling and bit of homesickness.

For this post, I am going to focus on the Kami nAPO Muna album. I know it might be old news for those of you in the Philippines so please bear with me.

Surprise, surprise… this is available on iTunes! First OPM album that I ever saw there. Well, it is actually the first one that I tried to search. Anyway, track listing of very classic Apo songs. BUT of course, covered by different bands and artists. Whilst the tracks are familiar to me, the names of the artists are not. Only goes to show how I’ve been out of touch with the Pinoy music scene — and of course, how old I am! In fairness, there are 2 names that I recognise: Parokya ni Edgar and The Dawn. OK, maybe 1 more… Kitchie Nadal.

My favourite is Panalangin by Moonstar88. Closely second is Top Suzara’s rendition of Anna then followed by Yakap Sa Dilim by Orange and Lemons. Loved the soothing voice of Maychelle Baay and I am so relating to the lyrics of this song at the moment. I found this video on YouTube, which is reminiscent of the film Mannequin:

It is so heartwarming to see and hear how the golden days of music that is truly Filipino are not forgotten. A true testament to the ‘close-knit’ attribute of Filipinos wherever we may be. As Apo themselves had put in the CD sleeve book:

It only means that there exists a connection between the generations and this link is originality, and the glorious expression of the Pinoy experience.

Shame I didn’t get to see the concert last August. Just one of all things that I missed and miss back home.
