Big switch off

Got this email from a friend who lives in Madrid, Spain today:

Roughly translated, it says that there is a nationwide appeal — from France — to switch off all lights on the 1st of Feb from 7.55pm to 8.00pm. Big, right?

Anyway, I Googled it tonight (using the keywords ‘switch off feb 1′ and the 3rd item on the results list took me this discussion on the Free Republic.

Switch off for the planet

We are asked to switch off all electricity from 7.55pm until 8pm on February 1 by Le Alliance pour la Planete, a grouping of 72 environmental organisations which includes the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace and the Nicolas Hulot association. This is a call for a nationwide five-minute respite for the planet, and is intended to draw attention to citizens’ concern about energy consumption.

The following day the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change http://www.ipcc.ch will be published in France.

Thing is, this will create a big surge when everybody switches all electricity back on after the 5-minute pause. It might even cause a breakdown. So even when the cause is admirable, it does sound ludicrous.

Insensitive

After leaving a comment on Junnie’s question accompanying the latest post entitled 7-11, I am compelled to mention something on my own blog. Not to justify my comment nor to defend myself but to accept that I was or am this kind of person. Maybe if I put it out for the whole blogosphere to see, everyone can remind me of this post when, nay, IF I am in a relationship again. To make sure that I won’t do it again … perhaps. That is, of course, after I curl up into a ball and stay in a corner of my darkened room to hide from the shame that is me.

It was a great fear coming to life.

In another relationship, I was accused of being the farmer of the golden goose story. I took and took. Never giving anything in return. This time, I thought that I was very conscious of this so I tried not too demand anything that would incriminate me of the same accusation. I thought that by not asking where should the relationship go, I was giving him space. I thought that by not asking what he really felt for me was allowing him to say it in his own time. I thought … that was my downfall, I thought too much. Assumed is more likely the correct word but as for me, all my assumptions were incorrect.

[Queue Britney Spears' Ooops, I Did It Again! ...]

I gave him a hard time. I got in the way of his plans in life. I ruined his dreams. I got him off track. He did tell me several times that I was crowding him but I failed to listen.

Insensitive, that’s me. That is already very evident with the number of times the word “I” has been used in this post.

Let this be a warning to all of you about me.

Wear sunscreen

It has been 20 days since the new year began. Doesn’t seem that long ago yet it certainly feels like it has been chugging all along… at least for me. Waiting is something I am not good at. But my heart is full of hope, making it all a big irony.

Anyway, a friend shared this song today and whilst urban legend has it that it was originally delivered as a commencement speech, it does make present some good advice. In the light of the new year (OK, maybe in time for Chinese New Year now) and for those who have been recently soul searching (you know who you are… including me, of course), I am sharing this with you.

There are several stories or hearsays on the origins of this tune/track. Some say it was inspired from a column of Mary Schmich in Chicago Tribune back in 1999 when asked what to say if she was to address a graduating class. Other stories came about, one being a commencement address for the 1999 class over at MIT. But whatever and wherever it came from, it gives really good advice. Click below to see the words.

Ban it, forever

The current installation of Celebrity Big Brother here in the UK has caused so much furore these past few days. I haven’t been following it but it isn’t easy staying away from it. Why? Newspaper have chosen the recent events to grace their cover and headlines instead of the more pressing issues.

So, what is happening?

In a nutshell, Shilpa Shetty, a Bollywood actress, is apparently being bullied – verbally – by the 3 other women in the house — who happen to be all British. Unkind remarks were said like:

“She can’t even speak English properly.”

“Shilpa Poppadom.”

Over 35,000 complaints have already been raised on these “racist slurs” and there are even demonstrations and burning effigies in India. Even politicians have jumped in on the discussions. The OFCOM, body regulating broadcasting in the UK, are on the heels of the producers in Channel 4.

The media hype has blown out of proportions.

My say is, stop watching it! If no one was watching it in the first place, no one would have made the first complaint and it would have been axed after the 1st season. True, those actions should not be absolved but at least, it wouldn’t have been this annoyingly and in-your-face flashing in big bold letters everywhere.

Goodness gracious!

If there is a petition anywhere to completely and permanently banish this program from the face of the earth, I’ll sign my name and affix my signature on it.
