Ban it, forever

The current installation of Celebrity Big Brother here in the UK has caused so much furore these past few days. I haven’t been following it but it isn’t easy staying away from it. Why? Newspaper have chosen the recent events to grace their cover and headlines instead of the more pressing issues.

So, what is happening?

In a nutshell, Shilpa Shetty, a Bollywood actress, is apparently being bullied – verbally – by the 3 other women in the house — who happen to be all British. Unkind remarks were said like:

“She can’t even speak English properly.”

“Shilpa Poppadom.”

Over 35,000 complaints have already been raised on these “racist slurs” and there are even demonstrations and burning effigies in India. Even politicians have jumped in on the discussions. The OFCOM, body regulating broadcasting in the UK, are on the heels of the producers in Channel 4.

The media hype has blown out of proportions.

My say is, stop watching it! If no one was watching it in the first place, no one would have made the first complaint and it would have been axed after the 1st season. True, those actions should not be absolved but at least, it wouldn’t have been this annoyingly and in-your-face flashing in big bold letters everywhere.

Goodness gracious!

If there is a petition anywhere to completely and permanently banish this program from the face of the earth, I’ll sign my name and affix my signature on it.

  1. Why is “Shilpa Poppadom” offensive. Please explain?

Anyway, its interesting. These 3 British women are probably gonna be harrassed and then it escalates from there. Give me a petition to sign to ban ALL reality TV shows and I’ll sign it. Even if it means saying good bye to Amazing Race. :)
