… on the other side, they say. But here is something that could make your garden the envy of the block!
When I was living in Spain, I’ve always admired how green is the football pitch at Camp Nou and Bernabeu stadia. Must be one heck of a gardener who maintains that greenery. But it could very well be artificial grass or what is otherwise known as AstroTurf.
AstroTurf was first laid out in 1965 at the (then) newly built Astrodome in Houston, Texas. Since then, it became widespread across the US and Canada for baseball and [American] football stadia. For Europe, it was only in 1980s when football (soccer) clubs installed them but banned them not long after. Injuries – such as carpet burns – became prevalent among players. Plus, it was said that artificial grass emitted some kind of odour, which is not pleasant as has been claimed. However, technological innovations have helped increase the popularity of the AstroTurf among the sporting world, specifically with FIFA. In 2001, the FIFA Quality Concept has been expanded to include artificial turf. As such, UEFA has allowed it back at the start of the 2005-06 season. Artificial grass, however, is not only for the football pitch. Anybody can purchase them and install them for personal or social use. If you own a significant square footage of land and cannot be bothered maintaining it to keep it green, then artificial grass is for you. If you are organising an event and would want the reception area to have a fresh feel into it, then artificial grass would provide that for you. Basically, artificial grass is the answer to create an oasis of greenery amidst the busiest and crampiest metropolis.
Whilst it is not environmentally friendly as being synthetic, you could do your share towards protecting the earth’s environment and natural resources by not using too much water (no need to water really) and by not using petrol-driven lawn mowers.
Artificial Grass Ltd in the UK is a producer and direct seller of artificial grass based in Cumbria. Hmm, makes one wonder if all the greens in the Lake District aren’t as natural as thought. Anyhow, their parent company, SIS Group Ltd have installed their products in several stadium pitches including Real Madrid’s Bernabeu, Manchester United’s Old Trafford and the Millennium Stadium. Whilst you are able to purchase their products through Distributors, their website also offers the facility to buy online. The Lifestyle range is priced from £10.93 per square meter and each category is designed for different purposes like putting green, lawns, paths, patios, balconies, all-rounder, etc.
There is also a link to the company’s weblog from the main website where it even mentioned about Prince Charles’ covering his garage floor with artificial grass. As being a prominent advocate of environmental causes, the ‘news’ presents a real vote of confidence for the product.
