The race to unlimited space

Have you noticed that Yahoo mail now offers unlimited space for its users? Yes, you read it right — UNLIMITED. This means that Yahoo beats Google’s almost 3GB of space for its webmail services.

Well, quite.

Yahoo! Mail unlimited

First off, not everyone has been given unlimited space yet. On the Yahoo! Mail UKIE blog, John Kremer (VP of Yahoo! Mail) said that they will gradually “unlimit” everyone over a few months to ensure smooth transition.

Rightey, if talking simply of space, then hands down to Yahoo but there are other things that still gives Google the edge, in my opinion.

1. No advertisements.
The minute you logon to Yahoo Mail, your browser is littered with ads — especially if you have converted to the new beta version, whilst Google maintain a clear and crisp user interface.

2. Friendlier to dial-up.
Okay, okay, in this day and age, it should be considered a heresy to even use dial-up. But it (dial-up) is still has its purpose for those ‘in transition’ with a broadband connection. Like me, at the moment. Anyway, I digress. As Google has no ads, it takes quicker to read emails over a dial-up connection.

3. Conversations.
I adore this feature of Google mail. It makes it easy to view related emails along with its history without having to traverse your entire ‘inbox’ or ‘sent’ folders.

Bear in mind that Google mail is still under beta. Who knows what they will bring once they are out of beta.

But this post is not a complaint nor a rant of Yahoo’s capabilities. I have kept my Yahoo account for a long time now and I use it to register with services/subscriptions like my frequent flyer accounts, telecommunications service and Amazon. Of course, my Yahoo account also serves as my primary IM (instant messenger) handle. Like I said, I am not complaining. In fact, I am even thankful.

What about you, which service do you prefer?

  1. I’ve gotten so used to Gmail and I have so many friends and family members whose Yahoo Mail accounts were hacked into and used maliciously. That’s not to say it can’t happen in Gmail but…

  2. I still prefer GMail over Yahoo Mail. Those big advertisements on Yahoo are such an eye-sore! I bet the Google crews got something under their sleeves now that Yahoo already unleashed the Unlimited offer.. just wait and see.

  3. Google for mail, definitely. I don’t even like Yahoo’s new beta email. It feels too much like Outlook. Like you, though, I still keep that email address for sign up stuff.

As for IM, I do prefer Yahoo. I like the interface and more of the people I know are there.

  4. I like Gmail and GTalk better because of its simplicity. Yahoo mail has too much advertisements that take too much time to load.

But if you use an open source IM software like Pidgin, not only does it have a simple interface, it let’s you use all your IM accounts at the same time using just one software.
