SPONSOR POST: Nonprofitshoppingmall.com

Simply put, nonprofitshoppingmall.com is a fundraising tool that uses the everyday practice of online shopping to drive new revenue streams of unrestricted funds into selected nonprofit organization’s annual budgets.

Nonprofitshoppingmall.com engages consumers to shop for the things they would normally buy, from the brands they would normally choose and at the prices they would normally pay. The difference, by shopping for everyday goods and services through nonprofitshoppingmall.com, shoppers also make a donation to their selected organization with every online purchase made.

Born of the conviction that it is absolutely possible to harness the trend of online shopping from within an organization’s existing support base and direct like-minded communities to shop online further supporting the causes they stand behind, our model differs from other fundraising sites in that we are philanthropically oriented, self-funded and encourage partnerships with our select group of highly rated organizations whose support base is today’s, and tomorrows, consumer.

We proudly feature national organizations like Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Global Green, Doctors Without Borders, ASPCA, America’s Second Harvest, First Book, Veterans For America and The Conservation Fund to name but a few. Change how you shop – turn everyday shopping into everyday giving – everyday.

Hits the net

Horoscopes and/or daily readings are amusing. I really don’t believe in them at all but sometimes they are spot on. I’d say it is all down to coincidence but one cannot help but feel freaked when it happens.

Today, in my Facebook Chinese Horoscope, it said:

Try not to let yourself get too depressed if things don’t go your way at work today by meditating or some other kind of relaxation break.

Sha-wing! Hits the net completely. Since last week, I have been feeling disgusted and completely de-motivated at work. We have a new CEO and he has shaken up the company big time. Thing is, I don’t like what is coming for me. I would probably elaborate on that another day but as I’ve said, I’m not looking forward to the day that everyone is working under this new mode.

Agh! I need to meditate now.

Grab a bargain

I have heard of stories in the past of parents and grandparents cutting out coupons and vouchers from newspapers and magazines. I think at some point when I was growing up, my lolo’s (grandfather) sister did it as well. Nowadays, however, there are hardly coupons in the papers. There are “catalogues” from the food stores and supermarkets like Morrisons for some of their special deals but there is really never a voucher that you cut out.

Of course, we all like discounts. Even better if they are free! But hey, in this day and age, there are not many things that come free. So, it is a bit comforting to find out about WebbyPlanet.com, a site where you could find discounts for your online and offline shopping pleasure. Coupons are available for electronics, travel, food and fashion. For example, Old Navy is currently offering $10 off for purchases in excess of $75 for both online and in stores until the 4th of October. There are tons to really choose from. Unfortunately, the shops with these offers are mostly in North America. Yes, online shopping does allow someone like me, in Europe, to purchase goods from some place else. But postage and packing, I imagine, would be dire. Although, there are “free shipping offers” about but I assume it is only for shipping in the US, US territories and Canada. Nonetheless, knowing that there is such a site where bargains are up for grabs is indeed noteworthy.

Looking for a job?

Here’s one for you lucky US citizens!

I want this job!

Major duties, the advert says in USA Jobs, include:

Astronauts are involved in all aspects of assembly and on-orbit operations of the ISS. This includes extravehicular activities (EVA), robotics operations using the remote manipulator system, experiment operations, and onboard maintenance tasks. Astronauts are required to have a detailed knowledge of the ISS systems, as well as detailed knowledge of the operational characteristics, mission requirements and objectives, and supporting systems and equipment for each experiment on their assigned missions.

Long-duration missions aboard the ISS generally last from 3 to 6 months. Training for long duration missions is very arduous and takes approximately 2 to 3 years. This training requires extensive travel, including long periods away in other countries training with our international partners. Travel to and from the ISS will be by Space Shuttle until its retirement in 2010. Following the Shuttle retirement, all trips to and from the ISS will be aboard the Russian Soyuz vehicle. Consequently, astronauts must meet the Soyuz size requirements, as indicated below. Additional information about the position can be found at www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/astronauts.

How cool is that?

What I like about this job advert is when it mentioned “Frequent travel may be required.” Hah! Really now?

Giro Italia 1: Arriving in style

(Ah! Finally… the continuation to ‘The layover’…)

Milan… one of the fashion capitals of the world. My fashionista instincts were pumped up with adrenalin as the plane was landing at Milan Linate airport. But as I look out the window, this greeted me.

Welcome to Armani airport!

Yes! This is Milan. I’m amazed how this airport is still called Linate when this sign is bigger and more visible. Mind you, after seeing this, I didn’t bother looking for the Milano Linate sign.

Anyway, Milan — any of the 2, Linate or Malpensa — is the closest airport when getting to Lake Como. It is but an hour by train from Central Station (Milano Centrale). The fare is around €24 each way, if I remember it right.

When finding accommodations in Lake Como, you must pay careful attention on the location. See, Lake Como is shaped like an inverted ‘Y’. The point where the 2 arms of the lake meet is the town of Bellagio. (Yes, like the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.) It is one of the most visited places in the lake. The south western tip of the lake is Como, the main town which serves travel connections with Milan and the rest of Italy. We stayed in Moltrasio, which is about half an hour from Como either by bus or driving. We were not driving so it was public transport for us. Unfortunately, we arrived in Como after 8pm so the bus is no longer running. No other choice then but to take the taxi who seem to be a frustrated Formula 1 driver as he sped all the way through the narrow winding roads. I was clutching on to the door with my dear life thinking that I’m going to get killed even before I had my holidays! Italian drivers!

The checkered flag was waving at Hotel Ristorante Posta, which is right by the Piazza San Rocco. It wasn’t a fancy, modern or boutique-y type hotel. The ambience was appropriate with the surroundings. Friendly and homely.

Hotel Ristorante Posta in Moltrasio

At first, I was disappointed by the location of this hotel. I meant, in reference with its location in the lake. It wasn’t a main town so not much to see. It was 30 minutes from Como and more than an hour from Bellagio! But when we explored Moltrasio in foot, the disappointment went away. Moreover, this hotel defied the fact that hotel restaurants are more expensive than a mere restaurant, as I’ve learnt from my previous travels. The price on the menu is very affordable… even cheaper than some of the places we went in the Lake Como area. Plus, it was scrumptious! Oh, I could taste that tiramisu right now…

As I’ve mentioned, the hotel is just by Piazza San Rocco where the Navigazione stops for Moltrasio. This is the ferry/boat that goes criss-crossing on the lake and my topic for the next post in this series. The plaza is not that big but it is charming and boasts of this lovely gazebo, which looks like it has been used in some big Hollywood film. It is actually part of the posher hotel to ours, the Hotel Grand Imperiale.

Banana’s coming to town

HOO-RAY!

Banana Republic

One of my favourite clothing shop — Banana Republic — is finally opening its doors here in the UK in January 2008! The flagship store will be located in London’s Regent Street. I wonder how they’ll do though as they will be opening during the sales season. I also hope that prices would be something reasonable. Much better if they simply convert their US prices to UK prices… hehehe!

Oooh, I can’t wait!
