Indeed, no one sings Nessun Dorma like Luciano Pavarotti. And from today it will be greatly and terribly missed. The great tenor lost his battle to cancer during the early hours of the morning, 06 September 2007, at his home in Modena.
This Puccinni classic is not the only that gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. Whenever Pavarotti sings Ave Maria by Schubert, it feels like I’ve died and gone to heaven.
And of course, the Maestro also has a trademark when rendering O Sole Mio.
One of the three tenors — Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo makes up the other two — has brought opera to a much wider audience. Perhaps bringing a younger generation of enthusiasts with his rendition of popular songs including a collaboration with the late James Brown. When he announced his retirement some years back, I so wanted to see, hear and experience his powerful voice. But it wasn’t to be and with his passing, it will never be.
Thank you for the music, signor… may you rest in peace.
Updated on 19:58: I have compiled several YouTube clips of Pavarotti’s collaboration with other artists on my other blog, See Musicals.
