The Big Lemon

Red, double decker buses are quite a common site in London. Today, however, there was one particularly sticking out – it was bright, lemony yellow!

It went whizzing by me along Streatham Hill Road today so I only managed to catch 3 things:

1. the name — The Big Lemon
2. that the bus runs on used cooking oil
3 and, the URL of their website — http://www.thebiglemon.com

The Big Lemon

What particularly caught my eye is they claim to run their buses on used (or re-cycled) cooking oil. I’ve heard quite several uses of used cooking oil but not the idea of having it run vehicles.

This quite ingenious business was founded by Tom Druitt who grew up in East Grinstead and was generally annoyed by the rail system in the UK. Rather than griping and moaning, he decided to set-up a bus service that would provide express services like trains but, of course, covering routes that were discontinued by the railways. The initial plan was to provide these services to the Brighton and Sussex localities. Not sure when they are expanding to London and the rest of the country so I was certainly to have spotted it in London.
