Oooo, business cards

If you attend those blogging conferences and expos, you will definitely meet a lot of people and most likely widen your blog’s readership. But as in most conferences (non-blogger) I’ve attended, I always make sure that I have my business cards with me. Now, for blogging events, it would make more sense if you promote your blog. Typical business cards will, more often than not, carry the URL of your blog, as it is something more personal to you, although you may be part of a pro-blogger network but even so, majority of the blogs out there are personal ones.

So, wouldn’t it be nice if you have this information quite handy for these occasions? No more fumbling for a pen and paper to write down the URL of your blog.

Ooprint is currently offering 100 FREE blogger cards (pay only the shipping fee) where you are able to publish your site along with your other contact details. Select from different designs, which you can personalise to even display a tag cloud.

But if you are really feeling creative and would like to include your own images and icons, you can do so for a small additional fee. If you are lazy (like me!) then the ones on the free offer is more than enough!

He’s on the road again

His travel stories will definitely give you the itch to pack and go somewhere. When I first read the accounts of his previous trips, the first word that came to mind was “WOW!” And then I had the honour and great pleasure of interviewing him for PINOYexpats last year for our feature story. I am speaking about Erik Trinidad of The Global Trip, of course! The destination this time is Central America. Head on there now and catch up with Erik on The Central American Eviction Tour.

No gig

I got an email from The Online Ticket Shop saying that I can now reserve tickets for the U2 concert at the O2 Arena next year. It got me so excited because I so want to see them so I clicked on the link. It did get me to the site — i.e. it wasn’t a bogus site — however, before I clicked on the ‘Submit’ button, the little voice inside my head told me to Google for the dates of the concert first. Both relief and disappointment to find out that the band had not confirmed any tour dates for London or anywhere else next year. According to the U2 site:

22.11.2007
Concert Rumours (Unfounded)
Just a note to correct reports that tickets are becoming available for planned U2 shows next year.

There are no plans for live dates next year – so please don’t buy tickets for any U2 shows you see advertised.

You can be sure any future live announcements will be made on U2.Com as soon as they are confirmed.

So, please be warned and avoid being scammed!

One less good person

I came to the office this morning with an upbeat attitude after spending a fantastic weekend with friends. Upon setting my coffee mug down, I did my routine email checks and, as normal, there were several from one of my colleagues in Boston. The first one had another colleagues’ name on the subject line. As I double-clicked on the email, there was slight excitement that it might be an announcement of an engagement, wedding or even a promotion. To my utter shock, it was a very upsetting news about her death. She died in a car accident in Boston last Saturday afternoon. As I was reading the brief message that was forwarded from the President of our Boston office, I felt shortness of breath and uttered her name over and over. “Ann-Marie… Ann-Marie… Ann-Marie…”

I read the next email from the same person and it contained a link to the news item on Boston Herald. WARNING: The photos with the news article contains distressing pictures of the crash! A copy of the first email was sent to our team with an added note from our new CEO, saying that the funeral has already been arranged for this coming Thursday.

There were quite a few of us here who know Ann-Marie. She came to the UK several times but most of our interactions were on the phone and email. On the phone, she had this smiling voice that is so infectious that one cannot help but smile, too! She organised all the company events in North America and since I assist in some of these events, I got to know her. In the last event that I attended with her at Phoenix back in 2005, we were talking about making plans to go somewhere — a sidetrip from one of any future events that we were both attending. There were three conferences since then: Dallas in May 2006, Orlando in May 2007 and Boston last October of this year. Due to other work commitments, I had to cancel my trips, thus cancelling the opportunity to go somewhere with Ann-Marie, too. Now we won’t be able to, ever.

Events like these are reminders that life can really catch us offguard. As much as we plan and plan the future, there is no certainty that – even with our best efforts – that they will come to fruition or even be here fulfill it. It is a witness that each day should be lived as if it were our last. Not only for our own pleasure but most importantly to make that difference albeit little to other people’s lives. To say thank you to those who have done us a favour. To say I love you to those who matter.

There is one less good person in the world and I will surely miss her sweet voice and her innocent yet infectious smile.

Ann-Marie

Giro Italia 3: Bellagio

(Continuing from View from the lake)

I suddenly realised that it is coming into winter (for us in the Northern Hemisphere) and I haven’t completed this series of posts and photos of my holidays in Italy last summer. I also mentioned in the last post that I will be talking about Bellagio and Como but as I reviewed the photos, I concluded that each town merits a post on its own.

Bellagio, like its namesake in Las Vegas, is one of the most popular towns in Lake Como. Unlike the famous hotel, however, Bellagio is a town. It sits at the point where the Lecco and Como branches of the lake meet.

Maria Amelia Lopez

Maria Amelia Lopez was born on the 23rd of December 1911 in Muxia in the A Coruna region of Spain and she’s a blogger.

She is now hailed as the world’s oldest *non-English speaking* blogger and had been interviewed by different news agencies around the world. Googling “Maria Amelia” will yield around 294,000 results. The first one, of course, is her blog itself — A Mis 95 Anos .

It was her grandson who set-up the blog for her as a birthday present. According to her, this was due to the fact that her grandson is stingy or a cheapskate!

Mi nieto, como es muy cutre, me regalo un blog.

But she is pleased with this present as the blog now serves as her time portal and a some kind of history records. She shares her experiences during the time of Franco’s rule in Spain in the blog. But in general, she has given us all a glimpse of a happy life, recalling how young men were more romantic with their display of affection. Of how people were kinder with words back then.

I really recommend that you go and read her blog (eventhough latest posts seems to present links from all the media attention she received of late) but it is in Spanish. Anyhow, I still would urge you to go and take a peek.

Well done, granny!
