Giro Italia 3: Bellagio

(Continuing from View from the lake)

I suddenly realised that it is coming into winter (for us in the Northern Hemisphere) and I haven’t completed this series of posts and photos of my holidays in Italy last summer. I also mentioned in the last post that I will be talking about Bellagio and Como but as I reviewed the photos, I concluded that each town merits a post on its own.

Bellagio, like its namesake in Las Vegas, is one of the most popular towns in Lake Como. Unlike the famous hotel, however, Bellagio is a town. It sits at the point where the Lecco and Como branches of the lake meet.

Narrow streets and winding stairs are my best description of Bellagio. When you arrive via the Navigazione, your first instinct is to go up these cobblestone stairs, which also makes up the streets of the comune. With shops, cafes and restaurants lined up on each side, one can really not resist.

One of these picturesque streets led us to a camera shop where the owner tipped us of an exhibit in the backyard. I could not remember who was the artist featured in this exhibit but the photos were of New York City in the 70s, methinks.

As we came out a piazza, there was this shop that certainly stands out from everything else. Why? Because it was a Christmas shop! Well, it would have been more appropriate now but as we were there during the summer, it seemed strange. At the entrance to the shop was this snowman figure made out of tin. It was, perhaps, the heat of the sun that struck an idea and so we asked the owner if we could play around with it. The idea was taking photos of a snowman is summer… melting! Of course, we could never really melt poor old snowman, whose official name is now Pat, in honour of the photographer behind the mini project.

One of the other things that I did was take a LOT of photos of roofs, balconies and windows. I looked up and they fascinated me. So for the rest of this post series, you will see photos similar to these ones I took in Bellagio.

Upon reaching the tip of the meeting of the Lecco and Como arms of the lake, one is presented with a place for quite contemplation and admire these breath-taking views of the lake.
