Centennial news

Calling all UP alumni, especially those from UP Baguio!

Things have been buzzing, as you know, for UP’s 100th birthday. It is a very special time for our alma mater and every student and alumnus are quite excited about the events that have been lined up. For a system-wide view of the Centennial celebrations, check out the official site.

Now, for those of you who will be in Baguio City for the Panagbenga Floral Parade (Baguio Flower Festival) on the 23rd of February 2008, then you might want to join the UP contingent that will be participating in this event. This will led, of course, by the UP Baguio students and alumni, but all UPians are most definitely welcome! For more info, please click here.

Then, for those UPB or then UPCB alumni, the Grand Centennial Homecoming has been moved to 16-17 of December 2008. Check out the announcement on Sayote Republic.

San Diego, a historic jewel in the Pacific

There has been a recent advert in the telly on California. I found it to be simple but sweet. It did not, however, entice me to move and live there but California is still on my list of places to visit. I still have not been to San Francisco and I would also like to visit the wine county of Napa. I have been to Los Angeles, where I have relatives, and San Diego. Would I go back? LA, maybe – aside from family matters, of course – but San Diego, a definite YES!

It had been a while since I was there and it was a brief visit on business. We stayed at the Residence Inn (a Marriott hotel), which is near the Little Italy District and the Gaslamp Quarter. It was a good hotel that offered free high-speed internet access in the rooms. I found the location of the hotel to be in close proximity of the San Diego International Airport, which was really handy.

There is so much gastronomic choices in San Diego. And in my opinion, it is here where I had the best Mexican food ever! This is probably enriched with the fact that they are in the border with Mexico. It was this cantina-type restaurant near or at the Old Town Park. Unfortunately, I could not remember the name but when I do return to San Diego, I would probably recognise the place.

I did not have much time for sightseeing back then so during my re-visit, I would make sure that I get to visit Balboa Park, Little Italy District and the San Diego Zoo. Of course, I will have to check out more of the night life because I was told by a friend who studied in the university there that San Diego has a rocking atmosphere especially in the Gaslamp Quarter. That is definitely something to look forward to.

Finding it hard to believe

This is just too good to be true:

A hush suddenly falls over the audience . . .
imagine yourself at an international gathering of hundreds of photographers . . .
all waiting expectantly for the announcement.
Finally it comes . . .

“Ladies and gentlemen, and fellow photographers . . .
the winner of one of the largest cash prizes ever awarded to
an amateur photographer . . .
Our Amateur Photographer of the Year for 2008 . . .
and Grand Prize winner of $10,000.00 is . . .

Charl A….!”

You make your way to the stage amidst the sound of thunderous applause and a standing ovation from your new friends.

We’re familiar with your work, Charl, and you know . . .
it could happen just that way!

Surely it could not just happen that way! It just doesn’t seem like it could. And now they have invited me to a convention and symposium in Las Vegas this coming 27-30 March 2008 where I could receive this “crystal award trophy”, which in itself is valued at $300, in front of renowned professional photographers.

Well, actually, I was more interested about the $10,000 prize. I mean, who wouldn’t? But it wasn’t quite clear in the email message.

. . .for this photo alone, you will have the opportunity to win one of the cash prizes . . . including a Grand Prize of $10,000–one of the largest cash prizes ever awarded to an amateur photographer.

And, Charl, new this year we’re hosting the 2008 International Open Invitational Photography Contest, where you’ll use your brand new digital camera to photograph any one of the many sites and scenes in Las Vegas and enter your best photo, which could win a second Grand Prize of $10,000!

We want to reward you for all your outstanding work and achievements by giving you not one but two chances to be a Grand Prize Winner of $10,000!

Hang on… I thought that I’d already won the $10K… why then does it say that I have the opportunity instead of YOU HAVE WON THE $10,000!!!

Like I said, it was all too good to be true.

I cracked it!

Charming treasure hunter, Ben Gates, is back! The National Treasure: Book of Secrets is due for release here in the UK on the 8th of February.

In celebration of this release, the producers, in collaboration with United Airlines, have created a virtual treasure hunt where you — and hopefully me — can win 1 of the 5 round-the-world trips for two.

The trail lets you click on the 4 locations of the film, answer a question that will provide you with a link to a Yahoo! Search. From there, you will have to follow the link to the treasure hunt where you will be given different tasks in order for you the get a 4-digit code. Once completed, you enter these codes back on the treasure trail site until you get all 4. Then you get to enter your name and details for the prize draw. At the end, Jerry Bruckheimer himself congratulates you for successfully finishing the trail!

I did it!

Now, I sit patiently for the results… meantime, watch the trailer.
