What do you do when your birthday falls on Friday? Par-tey, of course! I’ve never been so big in celebrating my birthday. Most of the time, a quiet dinner will do. But this year, I thought that since my birthday falls on a Friday, I thought I’d gather some friends around for a drink or two.
I sent out the invites through Facebook as most of the people I know in London are in there anyway. Shortly after, I received confirmations of people coming and it all started to come together.
As the people I invited are a mixture of students and professionals, I thought that meeting at a reasonable place would be just fair. That would mean avoiding Central London completely! I also decided that South London would be more convenient to most as long as it is near a tube station. Besides, I also live south of the river. I then looked around for places around Clapham not only because it has nice places but also easy to get to. See Clapham has 3 tube stations (Clapham North, Clapham Common and Clapham South), 1 rail station (Clapham Junction) and very much connected with the buses in Southern London. The first place I checked out was Gigalum, which really looks like a very happening place. Went there to see the place and check out the price of the drinks and my, my, cocktails were at £7.80 at least! Hmm… too pricey, methinks. There were also these places on my shortlist:
- Alexandra Pub — price good but place too loud
- Lost Society — has a dress code and also with pricey drinks
- Souk — also pricey
So, in the end, I chose the Firefly near Clapham South. It was great mainly because they have happy hour on weeknights from 6pm – 9pm and this entails 2 for 1 cocktails AND if you order 2 glasses of wine, they give you the rest of the entire bottle! How good is that? More importantly, the staff (Jo, in particular) were really friendly and made sure that the area I reserved was ready. I really had a nice time and I believe my guests had a fab time, too. At one point, I had different colours of cocktails in the table! One was mango martini, then a strawberry daquiri, a long island iced tea, mojito and caipirinha. Hammered I was! And if you are on my Facebook friends network, you’ll see the evidence.
Like I said in the beginning, I am one who is not really on big celebrations but seeing that it was a Friday, it was a good excuse to catch up with good friends. Besides, it was also a perfect day in London, weather-wise, when the weekend that followed was piss-poor with cold and snow. But what really made the day special were the people who were there and par-teyed with me.
