Still reluctant with SP3

Windows has (again!) notified me today of an update via the automatic updates feature. I currently have this on “Notify me but don’t automatically install them” option. This is because of the horror stories that I’ve read from people who have installed the Windows XP Service Pack 3.

SP3 was first released in May 2008. When news of PCs not booting, blue screens, etc. came about after its release and people started upgrading, I thought I’d wait a while. So, I switched off my full automated update. I wanted to save myself the trouble of the problems it might bring.

With the update notification today, I checked several fora on the subject and the nightmare stories are not over yet, which means, I still won’t be installing it on my PC.

How about you? Have you got SP3 running smoothly on your machines now? Did you have any problems during the upgrade process?

Advice, tips and warnings are welcome!

  1. Of course, switching to Mac is the best solution. ;) But that is unlikely in the short to medium term. I haven’t upgraded to SP3 yet so I don’t have the problems. Happy to stay on SP2 for as long as I can or can afford a Mac! ;)

  2. We had issues with the Exchange Server for those running Office 2007 with Service Pack 3. It would freeze Outlook and users were unable to read their email. Surprisingly quickly, Microsoft released a patch that fixed this problem – but who knows what other troubles may be lurking around the corner?

Am all for the Mac too but have to deal with Microsoft crap for work. Cheers.

  3. Anne, I’m not going to risk it. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

Tin, thanks! I quite like the way it turned out. I didn’t know what to put on the original header for the text so I replaced it with my Flickr RSS instead! :)
