Crunch time

Loose Leaf

What is it with hearing the crunch of a leaf pile on the ground at your feet? This is the reason that I love autumn. I simply cannot resist stepping on a pile or even just a single leaf on the ground. And if no one is looking, I might even jump on it. Somehow doing this reminds of a child without any worry in the world.

It is very, very satisfying.

On the side, clocks go back this Sunday (26 Oct). To me, Daylight Saving Time is now pointless. Why don’t we just leave the time as they are now?

The wrong response

I run some websites that are hosted by Bluehost. All of these sites are using WordPress for the CMS. I chose Bluehost not only because they offered a good deal for the price but also the fact that they have Fantastico built in with the cPanel. Fantastico made it easy for me to install things like WordPress for my domains. I also use it to keep my installations up-to-date as from time to time, it offers me the automatic upgrade. This is great because I don’t have to trouble myself with installing manually, which I have read for some, could go horribly wrong.

Anyhow, the version 2.6.2 of WordPress has been available for quite sometime now but it was only recently that the automatic upgrade was ready with Fantastico. Of course, I helped myself to it but as I clicked on “Upgrade to 2.6.2″ the next page was a blank. I then raised a ticket to Bluehost Support with the following message:

FB’s new look

When Facebook first released the ‘new’ look, I had a play with it straight away. The first thing I noticed was the slow response, i.e. it took sometime to load my own profile from the home page. But as days went by, it improved.

The new layout does need getting used to but to me, the one thing that makes me prefer this new look than the old one is how tidier it looks. All the applications are now placed under one tab. This means that people are less likely to invite me to become a vampire or zombie, or send me stuff like Louis Vuitton bags (send me the real thing instead, dammit!). Don’t get me wrong, I do like the applications but there are just too many of them. For example, I want to keep track of all my friends’ birthdays and other events. I initially installed Social Calendar. But then one of my friends uses Birthday Calendar, which meant I had to ‘install’ that one, too! Way too many apps that I began then (with the old FB) to accept all the ‘invitations’ but I don’t show them on my profile.

I really don’t get why several users are asking for the old layout back. Is it simply because they can’t be bothered learning and getting used to the new one? I mean, what is it really that is fundamentally wrong with the new one?

I suppose the developers would have to listen to their users (good product management practice) but I hope that they would instead give the option whether to navigate using the new look or the old.
