I run some websites that are hosted by Bluehost. All of these sites are using WordPress for the CMS. I chose Bluehost not only because they offered a good deal for the price but also the fact that they have Fantastico built in with the cPanel. Fantastico made it easy for me to install things like WordPress for my domains. I also use it to keep my installations up-to-date as from time to time, it offers me the automatic upgrade. This is great because I don’t have to trouble myself with installing manually, which I have read for some, could go horribly wrong.
Anyhow, the version 2.6.2 of WordPress has been available for quite sometime now but it was only recently that the automatic upgrade was ready with Fantastico. Of course, I helped myself to it but as I clicked on “Upgrade to 2.6.2″ the next page was a blank. I then raised a ticket to Bluehost Support with the following message:
I want to upgrade my WordPress installations to version 2.6.2 on Fantastico. But when I click “upgrade” it seems to be doing nothing. Please advise. Thanks!
Here is the response I got:
Usually, the updates should be done manually. WordPress has instructions on how to do the manual update.

Now tell me, is this a good answer coming from support?
Fantastico is there to make lives of web admins easier. I am not a full time administrator so I take advantage of facilities like these to spare me the manual stuff. Surely, there are those who would prefer to do as Daniel, Support Level 1 suggested but as I don’t have all the time in the world, I take advantage of applications that could do it for me automatically. I have used the automatic upgrade in the past and it has worked without a hitch for me so why then would I need to resort to manual this time? Call me lazy but I believe that the response I got was callous and very assuming.
I am disappointed, Daniel, Support Level 1. I am disappointed, Bluehost.

dreamhost’s one-click upgrade works. thank goodness! lipat ka na.
You’re right, Tin. Perhaps I should start looking around. The latest response I got from their support was — this time from a John Pratt:
To work around this difficulty, we recommend migrating from Fantastico to the SimpleScripts tool, and then use that tool to upgrade.
SimpleScripts is located right next to the Fantastico tool in your Control Panel. After clicking on that tool you will find a link at the very top which will take you to this page: http://www.simplescripts.com/articles/migrating_from_fantastico
Then it should take you to http://www.simplescripts.com/script_details/script:Wordpress
I think you have to be logged into your CPanel first, but hopefully you will find this as painless as Fantastico.
Good suggestion! BUT the link he provided with the migration guide from Fantastico to SimpleScripts require that the WordPress versions to be the same. So, I still need to get the damn Fantastico upgrade to work!
hmmmm, never made auto-updates, always did it manually because i’ve always had issues with one-click. however, i just recommended bluehost to a friend and he’s moved all his files over. i hope he doesn’t use any auto-installs or he’ll run into the same issues…
